This is the second year IDC campus has opened its gates for Researcher’s Night; A special evening dedicated to introducing families to exciting fields in science, organized by the EU and locally sponsored by the Israeli Ministry of Science, Technology & Space. This year IDC joined the Israeli consortium along with members from universities, regional research centers and science museums.
The lead topic this year was “Gaming and Gamification”. Thus, faculty members from the Effi Arazi School of Computer Science, Sami Offer School of Communications, Baruch Ivcher School of Psychology, and the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy played a key role in designing the event program. All academic activities where supervised by Prof. Yoav Yair, dean of IDC School of Sustainability. Preparation for the event took months and were led by IDC’s special events department.
On the afternoon of September 22nd, children, parents, grandparents and curious teenagers arrived at the building of the School of Communications where they could enroll and participate in different workshops, lectures and sports activities.
Stands offered visitors to take-part in different scenarios of a “war game” on aerial terror (high-jacked plane), and participate in simulation games on promoting regional peace. Also, lectures were held on various topics, such as; games in outer space, game theory, and the inner-workings of the human brain. Visitors were invited to take part in workshops where they learned how to build computer games, design robots in the MILAB lab (located at the School of Entrepreneurship), and learn how to build fun games – even from things as simple as straws.
IDC Radio gave complete coverage of the events. Special questions from children were aired, with replies from IDC researchers. Children also got to experience first-hand how a radio station and TV station work. IDC Sports Department offered fencing matches, chess games, and dancing near the Sculpture Garden. Near the end of the evening, families enjoyed a screening of the movie “Ender’s Game” on mats on the grass near the garden.
Altogether, as much as 1000 Herzliya residents visited Researchers Night at IDC, they enjoyed lectures and activities till 22:00 that night.
See you next year!
